Richmond Wedding Vendor Spotlight: Rigby’s Jig Ballroom Dance Studio

Do you want your first dance as a married couple to look less like an 8th grade dance and more like an episode of Dancing with the Stars?  Dance lessons at Rigby’s Jig are the perfect way to not only learn a dance that will impress your wedding guests but also a way to strengthen your relationship and relieve some stress.  Eleanor Robertson, the owner of Rigby’s Jig Ballroom Dance Studio, tells us why professional lessons are the way to go.

Rigbys Jig Eleanor

Eleanor Robertson, owner of Rigby’s Jig

Rigby’s Jig is a Ballroom Dance Studio focused on the communication of “Social” or “Partnered” dances in all styles. Smooth (Waltz and Foxtrot), Latin (Cha Cha, Salsa, Rhumba), Swings (East Coast, West Coast, Shag, and Hustle), Country Western and more are taught here.

Along with Private or Group lessons, Rigby’s hosts up to 10 dance parties a month for students to practice their moves in a fun, friendly, non-competitive atmosphere!

Choreographed wedding dances are our specialty! We want our wedding couples to feel comfortable on the floor for their first dance. We love creating choreographies that musically match their songs and creatively match their personalities.

How did you get started in this business?

I started my company 10 years ago to fill a need for social dancing in Richmond. I have always danced and found that I truly enjoy teaching people how to dance. Many people focus on taking people to competition, but I wanted my company to focus on the average Joe who just wants to learn how to dance for a special occasion, to meet people, get in shape, or just have fun.

Rigby's JigWhat differentiates you from other businesses in your field?

Rigby’s Jig is confident that it employs the most patient, personable and knowledgeable instructor staff found anywhere. Our studio is welcoming and just a fun place to be!

We have something for everyone, dancers of all levels mix it up in a place free of judgment and criticism. Whether you’re completely new looking to get started, Rigby’s is the place for you. It’s that simple.

Why do you like working with weddings?

Statistically, most wedding couples that come to us have never partner-danced before. When we connect them for the first time, the bright smiles on their faces as they begin to move across the floor are priceless! Seeing them happily working together toward a common goal and strengthening their intimacy at a time that can be very stressful, it’s a great feeling!

What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a bride and how did you resolve it?

I have had a couple who completely didn’t see eye to eye on what they wanted in a dance—she wanted something over the top and highly choreographed, he just wanted to sway back and forth. We worked for a while on finding the right balance so that both of them enjoyed the process and the finished product. It’s all about communicating and helping them see that their wedding and commitment to each shouldn’t get lost in the details of event planning and lofty expectations.

Rigbys Jig StudioFrom a vendor’s perspective, what is the best piece of advice you can offer engaged couples?

Come to Rigby’s Jig for your wedding first dance lessons! Our first thoughts are giving you the connections and communication advice that will make performing comfortable. At the same time, we’re preparing you with skills to dance at the rest of your reception and the rest of your life together!

What or who motivates you?

My students! We are fortunate to have some of the most interesting and fascinating people walk through the doors at Rigby’s.

RIgby's Jig 2

What do you like to do when you are away from work?

I hang out with my awesome husband, Tim, and my 16 month old son, Burkley, and my 3 ½ year old daughter, Bella! I am also a fitness buff!

What would we be surprised to learn about you?

I grew up in Richmond.  I went away to George Washington University for college and didn’t expect to return. BUT, I met my husband Tim, started my studio and haven’t looked back since!

Thank you for answering our questions, Eleanor!  If you would like to learn more about Rigby’s Jig and even take a virtual tour of the studio, visit www.rigbysjig.com.
