The last time we were at Seven Springs, it was a blast! We’re excited to introduce you to Brittney Schopen and Brett Hunnicutt, the Venue Manager and Proprietor (respectively) of Seven Springs. Just wait until you see photos of this gorgeous farm venues!
Seven Springs is a brand new venue, started with the vision of a historic atmosphere that has all the finer points of the modern world. The property consists of 107 acres that holds our working sheep farm as well as the historic home and adjoining guest houses and event spaces. We are available for day-of events and overnight stays as well as full wedding weekends.
How did you get started in this business?
Brett, the owner of the property, has a love for Virginia history, a passion for the Richmond food scene and a keen eye for business. With those combined talents, he saw a great opportunity to start an event venue that could not only fill some gaps in the wedding community but also become a place for agriculture, education and a community focus. He fell in love with Seven Springs and felt it was the perfect place to bring his vision to life.
Brittney was raised in the hospitality industry with roots in her family’s fine dining restaurant, a working knowledge of hotels and a blossoming career as a Richmond wedding planner. Along for her obvious passion for event planning, her ability to read a room and ensure guests needs are met locked in Brett’s decision to bring her on as the property’s venue manager.
What differentiates you from other businesses in your field?
We offer a modern and minimalist look at a historic venue. We feel we have been able to craft a space that allows guests to feel comfortable and relaxed while still maintaining the elegance and charm a home like Seven Springs has to offer. You can access the entire property and all of the buildings and never feel like you might be in someone else’s space or about to break a priceless antique!
While our business focuses mainly on weddings, we are also open to corporate, community and educational events. We strive to work with local organizations to bring children to the property to learn about farming and the animals that we house as well as a dose of history. We also have been partnered with local restaurants and hope to continue those relationships to bring our heritage breed Hog Island Sheep to the Richmond diners.
Why do you like working with weddings?
Let’s face it — weddings are fun! There is hardly an occasion when someone is upset about attending a party to celebrate the love between two people and getting to help bring that love and that party together is always rewarding.
With each new client we get to experience a different working relationship, meet new vendors, grow in our abilities, and see the beginning of new lives together. We enjoy helping plan and execute these events with couples and hope to always be a bright spot in what can sometimes be a very stressful planning experience.
We were contacted by a bride who was in tears upon finding out 3 weeks before her wedding that her venue was suddenly not be able to accommodate the wedding she had been planning for a year. We were fortunate to have the weekend available for her wedding and quickly arranged a venue walk-through and planning meeting with her and her partner. With the help of some wonderful vendors and a flexible family we were able to relocate the wedding day to our venue without having to change any of the aspects of the day they had already planned.
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
Hire a wedding planner! At the very least, hire a day of coordinator. As much as we as a venue will work with you to plan the logistics of your wedding, there is nothing better than having someone who is there as an advocate for you so you can enjoy the entire experience and not worry about the careful details you have spent so much time arranging!
Oh, and always plan on using more ice than you think is necessary! Seven Springs has you covered there — we have an on-site ice machine!
What or who motivates you?
Our main motivator is customer experience. We want everyone who steps onto our property to take pleasure in every second of it. From the trip up the driveway to the sheets on their bed, we strive to make sure we have attended to every aspect of guest comfort and enjoyment!
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
Brett spends his time away from Seven Springs working as part of his family’s construction business and whenever a spare moment presents itself is always ready for a road trip to explore a new city.
Brittney spends her days off visiting Richmond restaurants with friends, strolling through The Fan and Church Hill exploring all that the neighborhoods have to offer, and planning (hypothetical) dream vacations.
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
Brett is a pretty upfront guy and doesn’t have much to hide, but you might be surprised to learn that his favorite television program is Antiques Roadshow. He has been known to get really involved (read: shout at the t.v.) while watching.
You might be surprised to know that Brittney is not a Southern native. Even though she was born and raised in Michigan, her accent and hospitality are pure Virginia!
