How did you get started in this business?
Orrie Gaines Photography, LLC was created in college when my father told me to purchase a camera to document my life. During my time on campus, I would find small photography jobs to help make ends meet. After graduating with a degree in Chemistry, I worked several boring lab jobs. I found that this just was not the right fit and quickly realized my calling was behind the lens of the camera.
Slowly, I met great people who helped me build my business. With 10 years experience and 3 years doing this full time, I have never been happier to serve the great couples I have met throughout the years.
What’s your favorite wedding story?
Every wedding is special special in its own way. I do not think I have one wedding story that sticks out more then the other. For me, the wedding day is just as special for me as it is for the bride and groom. Every wedding is personal — it’s not just a job, it’s much much more.
Why do you like working with weddings?
Working in the photography world for so many years, I have done fashion, beauty, family, events, and much more. I find that wedding photography blends all those styles together in an 8 hour day. Fashion photos, because your working with a beautiful dress and bride. You get to pose her and make her look even more amazing. I get to capture beauty images with the amazing makeup and family photos that are traditional as a well as fun and silly. Then, there are event photos of the reception that show the dynamics of the venue and the joy everyone feels on that special day. The most important part is my outgoing personality. I love the interaction with the wedding party and guests.
What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a bride and how did you resolve it?
The most difficult situation is the unknown. Most of the time, we are well prepared for any wedding situation, but I had a couple that was very stressed about the chance of rain on their special day. I quickly went to the venue and found indoor places for portraits and family photos that looked amazing. I contacted the bride and groom, and they were very happy to know there were alternatives in case of rain. Luckily, it did not rain that day and we proceeded as planned!
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
Book your wedding with Orrie Gaines Photography, LLC! No really, make sure your wedding photographer has a proven track record for delivering what you expect.
Also, remember that we are artists, and we want to be able to create, but creating takes time. Having the time to spend with the couple doing photos is very important.
How far in advance should couples book your services?
In most cases, 6 month to a year in advance.
What inspires you the most / where do you find inspiration?
Great photography inspires me. We are all artists — there isn’t a right or wrong way to photograph a wedding. A photographer that may have a different style or approach to a wedding is always interesting to me. Secondly, the couples energy. I love couples that express their interest or likes with me. Screenshots of photos they find online gives me an idea of what they like and how much risk they are willing to take.
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
My passion is traveling. I have been to many many places, some of which would include Egypt, London, Brazil, and many more. My favorite trip was Germany. Driving on the autobahn at speeds of 150mph was quite amazing!
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I would say that I’m very fun and have highly positive energy. Most brides are amazed that from the start of the day until the last dance, I’m high energy and I capture every emotion during the wedding.
