Real Richmond Wedding: Emily and Brandon at The Brownstone
Emily and Brandon
November 17, 2018
How They Met
Emily and Brandon first met in August 2013 at an ice cream social after their first day of classes their Freshman year at James Madison University. But, they didn’t have their official first date until 10 months later in Richmond. The two grabbed lunch at Garnett’s Cafe then went to Belle Isle to enjoy each other’s company in a hammock. They were inseparable from there on out.
The Proposal
Brandon proposed on March 10th, 2018 at Libby Hill Park. Emily says, “After eating lunch with friends and then spending time exploring Maymont, we ended up at Libby Hill Park. He gave me a handwritten letter and then got down on one knee. Of course, I said, ‘YES!'”
The Details
Emily explains, “I knew I wanted to get married at First Baptist Church. My parents got married there and I grew up going to church there too.” The two wanted to find a reception venue that was close to the church and in the city. Once they toured The Brownstone and saw how it would perfectly accommodate their guests and wedding plan, they knew it was a great fit.
At their ceremony, they had traditional vows, and sang “In Christ Alone.” The two took communion before they were officially announced as husband and wife.
For their decor, they wanted their look to be simple, but lovely. While they didn’t have a particular theme in mind, they knew they wanted to incorporate burgundy flowers and lanterns into the decor. They also added navy and pewter to their wedding colors. Emily’s bridesmaids wore charcoal gowns and Brandon’s best guys looked dapper in navy suits.
At their reception, their food from Butler’s Unique Catering was a highlight. “We had a buffet of chicken, brisket, mashed potatoes, and roasted vegetables.” They carried their color theme into the reception, with beautiful centerpieces with burgundy, red, and white flowers. These JMU Alumni had two special tables. One for the cake and cupcakes and the other was for their JMU-themed favors. “We love to show support for our alma mater. Our favors were purple and gold personalized M&M’s.” At one point during the reception, the JMU fight song came on and all the attending alumni came together for a fun picture.
Their November night ended in a dance party as Emily and Brandon celebrated with 90 of their closest friends and family members.
Favorite Part of the Day
For Emily, her favorite part of the day was her first look with Brandon. “It was an intimate moment that I know I won’t forget!” For Brandon, it was having the chance to share the moment with everyone at the reception and being able to proclaim Emily as his wife.
Biggest Challenge
“Budget proved to be the biggest challenge, but I was able to come in under what I allotted! My vendors were easy to work with and I loved the preparation for the big day!”
Best Piece of Advice
“Make sure to budget properly and give yourself enough time to plan the wedding of your dreams! Also, don’t sweat the small things. Focus on what’s important: getting married to the person you love.”
