Real Richmond Wedding: Fatima and Julian at The Dominion Club

How they Met:
Fatima and Julian met at Rosebar in D.C. on October 18, 2014, during Howard’s Homecoming Party (although neither attended the school!) Fatima was with one of her best friends when Julian saved her from an overly aggressive suitor. The two laughed about the encounter and exchanged numbers. Julian called Fatima the next day, but Julian lived in Silver Spring and Fatima was in Glen Allen. Fatima explains, “If there’s a will, there’s a way.” The two ended up seeing each other once a week after their first meeting, and the rest is history.

The Proposal:
Julian asked Fatima to be his wife at the 2016 Food and Wine Festival at the National Harbor, MD.  “Prior to us entering the festival, he was being really weird about his bookbag and I kept asking him if he wanted me to hold it.” He eventually gave in, and Fatima had no idea that she was walking around with the ring on her back.

The two spent the day eating and drinking, and as they were leaving lunch Fatima noticed one of her Line Sisters in the crowd outside. When Fatima turned around to ask Julian about the coincidence, he was on one knee. “He has a great sense of humor and loves to joke. In the past, he found it funny to joke around by getting on one knee as if he was going to propose.” But as her friends and family surrounded her, she knew it wasn’t a joke. After saying “are you serious?!” Fatima said “yes!”

The Details:
The couple decided on The Dominion Club because they wanted a unique indoor ceremony where everyone would have a great seat to see the action. Their theme was romantic candlelight, using a black and white color scheme for a classic, elegant, and simple look. The wedding was picturesque with unique thought-out details to personalize the ceremony. “My maternal grandparents are deceased and I wanted them to be part of our special day…so I had their names embroidered on a piece of my train, in a light blue color. It felt like they were walking down the aisle.” Effectively checking off her “something blue.”

For the reception, they stayed away from some of the traditional aspects seen with weddings. The two opted out of flowers except for white roses at the bar, to represent where they first met, Rosebar. They used unique details, like dramatic centerpieces and a hand-painted aisle runner, to give the space life. The couple added personal touches with personalized napkins, dessert forks, cake toppers, and champagne flutes.

“It was important to us that our guests ate great food, drank, and danced their hearts out!”

Favorite Part of the Day:
Fatima’s favorite parts of the day?  “Laughing and joking with my dad while we hid off in the corner before we walked down the aisle, Julian taking my hand and us walking down the stairs to get married, and sitting back two hours into the reception and looking around at all the love in the room!” Julian’s favorite part of the day was the couple’s vows.

Biggest Challenge:
“Finding a dress and accessories for my mom! Most say the bride is the most difficult to shop for during the wedding, but I found my dress one week after he proposed (my mom paid for it). My mother, on the other hand, required a little more time to make her selection!”

Best Piece of Advice:
“Plan ahead and enjoy the engagement! Take time to listen to yourself and your partner. Remember this is your special day; take moments throughout the wedding day to soak it all up!”
