Real Richmond Wedding: Heather and Andrew’s General Store Party
Heather and Andrew

How They Met
It was frisbee that brought Heather and Andrew together in May of 2009. They both played for their respective college teams, Andrew for the University of Mary Washington and Heather for the University of Virginia, and met while playing for Richmond Ultimate, a local recreation league the summer after their freshman year. Heather divulges, “Our first official date was August 4, 2009, and I remember it was a Tuesday because it was the only day of the week where we weren’t playing frisbee or working!” Andrew asked Heather out a few weeks before school was set to start and he told her nothing about the date other than to wear sneakers. The two ended up sneaking around an abandoned golf course, getting Italian ice, and watching a terrible movie on his parents’ couch. “We talked on the phone every night for the rest of the summer, and never looked back!”
Andrew asked Heather to marry him at one of her favorite places, Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. “I had just started my first nursing job at VCU, and finally had 4 days off in a row, so we decided to go to the beach for a long weekend.” The perfect opportunity for Andrew to pop the question. On their second-to-last morning, Andrew woke Heather up at 5 AM to see the sunrise, something he had never done in their 9+ years of knowing each other. Heather had a hunch immediately. “We trooped down to our favorite spot on the beach, where he got down on one knee just as the sun was coming up over the horizon.” The two celebrated with breakfast at their favorite diner, waking their friends and family with the good news.
These two knew they wanted their ceremony and reception in the same place, so when they stumbled upon their venue, they knew almost immediately that it was perfect. Totally unique, rustic, and historic, they loved the aesthetic and stylish accents. They barely add any decor which made planning a breeze.
While they didn’t have a specific theme, they wanted to have a general appreciation of the beauty of Virginia. For their colors, “I wanted something more muted to complement our surroundings and ended up choosing a slate blue and eucalyptus color palate.” Heather admits that Andrew looks amazing in grey, so that was an easy choice for the formal wear. “I love the mismatched, eclectic look, so we had chairs and tableware in various colors, and kept our floral arrangements mostly green.”
Together with their officiant, a former fellow nurse in the Neuroscience ICU, they put together a ceremony uniquely them. With special readings and traditional aspects like the Irish ring warming tradition, they said their vows under the foliage of trees.
Small, personal touches really brought their personalities into their September day. “Probably my favorite detail was doing an anniversary dance instead of a traditional bouquet toss…we didn’t realize we knew so many couples married for 40+ years! We loved getting to honor their commitment that way.”
Favorite Part of the Day
“I loved our last dance the most. I had picked ‘All You Need is Love’ by The Beatles to close out the dancefloor and halfway through the song, our guests formed a circle around us and turned it into a sing-a-long.” Everyone left at the party ran to the dance floor and the circle kept making room for them until every single person was surrounding the happy couple swaying. “It was unplanned and perfect.”
For Andrew, he loved standing at the altar, watching Heather walk down the aisle towards him. He also loved how the size of their wedding allowed them both to spend time with every single one of their guests.
“Sticking to a budget, and managing the guest list, which I feel go hand-in-hand! Those were our first two decisions in the wedding planning process.”
Best Piece of Advice
From Andrew, “With the details, it’s important to make a decision, but it doesn’t always matter what decision ends up being.”
From Heather, “Have everything wrapped up two days before your wedding so you can start enjoying your weekend the moment you wake up on rehearsal day.”
And from both the happy newlyweds, “Communicate a schedule for that weekend with families and parties a few weeks ahead of time so everyone knows where to be and when!”
