Richmond VA Wedding DJ: Bunn DJ Company
Meet DJ Frankie, the owner and professional DJ behind Bunn DJ Company! Bunn DJ Company is a Richmond, VA DJ and wedding entertainment company. They promise no Chicken Dance at your wedding, which we appreciate!
Tell us a little about your company!
Bunn DJ Company can be described in three words: Classy. Fun. Professional.
We’re not what you think of when you think of your typical wedding DJ. We don’t do cheesy, we don’t pack inflatable toys, and we don’t do the Chicken Dance!
Bunn DJ Company was started in 2000 by Joe Bunn and has grown to be the premier DJ company in the Carolinas. Joe recently partnered with long time Richmond DJ, Frank Guertler, to bring their years of experience to RVA.
How did you get started in this business?
I started making mix tapes for people the minute I could buy a dual cassette deck back in the late 80’s, and I co-hosted an open format college radio show when I was living in Washington State.
My DJ career began around 2002 when I was living in Raleigh. A DJ friend of mine who wasn’t available for a gig asked me if I wanted to play the show. He knew that I loved the music they were looking for, so he recommended me. That gig turned into a residency at that location and soon after I was booked for another night at a sister location. Then, I worked for Bunn DJ Company for several years in Raleigh before moving to Richmond in 2005.
What’s your favorite wedding story??
My latest favorite story is from a recent wedding ceremony. The couple had chosen their special song to walk down the aisle to, and one of the grooms had secretly recorded himself and a professional backing band singing their song. His partner had no idea until I started the song and they began walking down the aisle! Just seeing the surprise and happiness on his partner’s face made DJing their wedding celebration one of my favorite stories.
Why do you like working with weddings?
Weddings are a day where you can truly make an impact on someone’s memory and experience. Being part of one of the most important days of a person’s life where you can help enhance the occasion is humbling and gratifying. I just love seeing couples and their friends and family smiling, dancing and having the time of their lives!
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
Clear communication with your vendors from the very beginning will help reduce day of or day before crises. Confirm that all vendors are co-ordinating with each other before the event. For example, when it comes time for the cake cutting, having the DJ, the caterer and the photographer talking beforehand ensures that everything is in its place for that special moment.
How far in advance should couples book your services?
Six months to a year is a good rule of thumb. However if I’m not booked, myself or one of my guys can take care of last minute events with at least 7-10 days notice.
What inspired you the most / where do you find inspiration?
I take constant inspiration from those around me primarily, but secondly I’m an avid reader and books, blogs and magazines keep me constantly updated and inspired.
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
I love record shopping, traveling out of the US and spending some time at one of Richmond’s many craft breweries seeing bands or meeting people.
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I once quit my day job to backpack around the world for 14 months, during which time I bought a motorcycle while in Vietnam, and I rode from Saigon to Hanoi which is similar in distance as driving from DC to Las Vegas!!
