Meet Jessica, the owner and planner behind Elevated Events of Virginia!

Tell us a little about your company!

Elevated Events of Virginia is a wedding and event planning company based in New Kent, Virginia that serves Williamsburg to Harrisonburg. My company’s focus is providing people with genuine hospitality during one of their most joyous occasions. I love to see the couple enjoying themselves, as well as their guests!

How did you get started in this business?

I graduated from James Madison University in 2014 with a degree in Hospitality Management. I knew that I wanted to be in the events industry, so I started off working as a Catering Coordinator for a hotel, followed by a Sales Coordinator for another venue, and then as a Banquet Manager for a restaurant group. The aspect of these positions that I enjoyed the most was getting to work with couples to make their day special.

What’s your favorite wedding story?

My favorite wedding story was my first LGBTQ wedding. The two girls were so sweet, and they had their entire family’s support; nothing was going to stop them from having an amazing wedding. The week before their wedding, gay weddings were legalized in Virginia. The next day, I met with them and they could not stop smiling! They were as giddy as little kids in a candy shop. I couldn’t have been more excited for them to be able to not only enjoy their day.

Why do you like working with weddings?

One of my favorite parts is when I’m meeting with a couple and we get this great synergy going and just keeping bouncing ideas off of each other until we have this creative masterpiece. I also really enjoy flipping through information to make the most logistically sound plan so that everything comes together seamlessly.

From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?

Carefully consider what you are reading when trying to compare apples to apples, because not all vendors bundle and package their products and services the same way. While one vendor may seem less expensive from the start, once you add on the additional items to match their competitor’s package, they may end up being more expensive. Also, consider the quality of product or service the vendor is offering.

How far in advance should couples book your services?

Since I offer day-of and full planning services, couples can book 30 days or 2 years prior to their wedding. I strongly recommend booking sooner rather than later to ensure that I have your wedding date available and to help relieve stress. The last month before your wedding, there is so much going on with tying up loose ends at work, getting the honeymoon together, wrapping up the rehearsal dinner, and attending showers and parties. Stressing about last minute wedding details should be something they hand over to a planner.

What inspired you the most / where do you find inspiration?

A pineapple symbolizes warmth, welcome, friendship, and hospitality and has become an icon of the south. I truly value the symbolism of the pineapple because it represents everything that I feel weddings and events should encompass. The couple is not only declaring their love for one another, but also a lifetime of friendship. The guests at the wedding should feel welcomed and catered to because, at the end of the night, people will remember their experience the most.

What do you like to do when you are away from work?

The lake is my favorite get-away place. I love boats; I can float if I just want to relax or I can tube and drive fast for a thrill. When I’m on the water, I feel disconnected for a while, which helps keep my sanity.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?

I was a true “band geek” all throughout middle and high school. And it didn’t even pay off because I was never good at playing the French horn.
