We are proud to introduce you to Capt. Rob, the owner of Capt. Rob’s Pigalicious Barbeque Catering!  This man makes candied bacon that is SO good, we can almost forgive his choice in college football teams. 😉

Tell us a little about your company!

We are a catering only company. We  only create high quality food and pay close attention to the details. We feature award-winning meats, lip-smacking sides and tongue-wagging desserts. This is southern comfort food at its finest. We can provide food for any of the wedding events, not just rehearsal dinner and reception. We can cook offsite and do an onsite buffet or for over the top experience, we can do everything onsite. We serve wedding groups from 30-300.

I started Capt. Rob’s Pigalicious Barbeque Catering in 2010. My mission is to provide brides and general clients with competition level bbq with a down home relaxed atmosphere.

How did you get started in this business?

I grew up with both Mom and Grandma in the same kitchen. Our family thought of ourselves as the Waltons — three generations under one roof. I have a food service background not only in the kitchen but running a successful operation. I hold two culinary certificates from the University of Richmond along with many years of feeding my family and friends. I am a Kansas City Barbeque Judge and have won multiple awards at their events in Virginia. I have also won a Rotary BBQ competition in Chester, VA numerous times.

One event I am most proud of is winning the VA Lottery’s Grill-Off a couple of years ago. We won first place and received a $5,000.00 check for my Famous Cajun Burger.

What differentiates you from other businesses in your field?

Our food makes your eyes and tongue happy. We are a catering only company that produces all of the award-winning meats with hickory and charcoal. No propane is used in cooking our food. I don’t know of any of the local bbq joints that truly cook from scratch onsite and only cook with wood. There is a difference!

When we are cooking for you, we are only cooking for one event: yours. Our selections are not mass produced like in a restaurant. The end result is award-winning, high quality food that is FRESH. Even though our food is comfort food, we can present it in an upscale fashion if the bride requests it. We do this all in a relaxed backyard atmosphere where our main goal is to fill you up with food and fun.

Since we only do buffet style service, you will have a full plate not a little something in the center of an otherwise empty plate. If someone leaves an event we are catering hungry, it’s their own fault!

Why do you like working with weddings?

I got married in December of 1986. WHAT A STRESSFUL EVENT!!! We had snow, cold, a sick bride, and we did not even get to sample the food at our own reception. I would not wish that on anyone! I want to do my small part in putting a smile on the bride and groom’s faces with food that will be remembered for years to come with minimal stress. We have done weddings from real barns to upscale inns, and they all had one thing in common: the bride and groom wanted high quality, fresh food in a relaxed atmosphere.

What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a bride and how did you resolve it?

Trying to feed guests southern comfort fare that are vegetarians. We cannot help vegans. We can accommodate any diet within reason with a heads up from the bridal party. We can create a menu that has something for everyone to eat.

From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?

PLAN EARLY! Go to the bridal shows, ask lots of questions and taste the samples provided. Book your caterer ASAP so that the date will not be booked by another bride or event. Have a realistic budget. You cannot feed 150 people for $10.00 a plate.

Most of all. Remember this is your day. Plan it for the two of you.

What or who motivates you?

My motivation comes from within. That is where any successful business person gets motivated. Catering is instant gratification. When the food passes the lips, the smiles come out. Nothing is more gratifying at the end of a long 14 hour cook and serve than smiles from guests and a pat on the back from clients.

What do you like to do when you are away from work?

I am a RABID VT Hokies fan. Have you seen my truck? Every weekend in the Fall we are going to a football game.

Lately, I’ve also been in the kitchen teaching my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter Jemma how to cook. She is good at dumping things in the bowl for me but she is not too happy with the noise from the mixer.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?

A few things. I am a third generation business owner. I also have a degree in turf management/horticulture from JSRCC. I have had my lawn care company OrganiCare for 25 years. I am glad I have good staff there so I can pursue my other passion of barbeque catering. Finally, I hold a United States Coast Guard Captain’s License. That is how I came up with the name for the barbeque company. Sadly, when the bbq business got so good, I sold the charter boat.
