Tell us a little about your company!

Hayes & Fisk Photography has been celebrating weddings and special occasions with the most amazing couples for over 20 years. Our dedication to fine art photography and sterling customer service has garnered us a reputation in both Richmond and internationally. We are full time photographers and spend every working day creating beautiful portraits, capturing perfect weddings and giving all of our clients the most priceless memories of today to enjoy tomorrow.

How did you get started in this business?

Jamie Hayes (my business partner) was my bridal portrait photographer, and he was amazing. He made me feel not only comfortable but I trusted him and the fact that I would feel both confident and beautiful in all of my portraits. After I had my daughter, I looked him up and started using him as my family photographer. One thing led to another and we started working together. He has a fast paced and quick growing small business, and I had a desire to step in and assist in creating not just a photography studio but a sought after brand name in our community and beyond.

What differentiates you from other businesses in your field?

Jamie Hayes and I are both Master, Craftsmen, Certified Professional Photographers. Our degrees and professional memberships alone represent our outstanding achievements in our field. But the true thing that makes us a stand out and in my opinion outstanding is our constant search for more education, more great and creative ideas and more ways to make our client’s experience and products with us the BEST in the world. We not only lecture and teach all over the world for our industry but we also spend at least two weeks every year learning and experiencing the advice and wisdom from other respected members of the wedding community. We have spent time with Preston Bailey, Sylvia Weinstock, Mindy Weiss, Dennis Reggie, Colin Cowie, and so many others. Our mission is to constantly be honing our craft and making sure we are giving our clients the best possible experience and images that we can.

Why do you like working with weddings?

How much happier can you get? Working weddings!!! The excitement, anticipation, a little frenzy, a lot of love, and so many laughs are just a fraction of the day. I thrive on fast paced situations that I can capture and be a part of. Nothing makes me happier than being there from the moment the bride slips into her gown, sees her dad for the first time, walks down the aisle, kisses her new husband, and then dances the night away all the while surrounded by her best friends and beautiful family. Weddings are glorious and magical and just perfect for both me and my style of photography.

What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a bride and how did you resolve it?

The hardest situation is when you have a bride or groom that has a parent, close relative or friend that is part of the wedding and is terminally ill. It literally is the most gut-wrenching situation for everyone. For example, many years ago we had a bride and her father was terminal. The wedding date was pushed up so he could be there and walk her down the aisle and dance with her. The entire day was amazing and sweet and blessed with his presence, and I personally cried more than I ever have at a wedding. Every single moment between daddy and daughter left me emotional and on fire to capture each second, every glance and every moment. I always want to give my clients the best but this was different, this was heavy. To this day, I am still great friends with the bride and her husband. She credits me with the most amazing memories and keepsakes of a time when her father could walk and speak and even dance. The fact that I gave this to her is an honor. I love what I do and I hope that all of my couples and their families treasure the memories that are captured.

mary_fisk_taylor_5From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?

The best advice that I give engaged couples is to not just tolerate or like but really, really, really love your vendors. These are the people that you are contracting to take care of one of the most important days of your lives. You want to love these people, and you want to have the most confidence in their ability to carry out your every wish and you certainly want to enjoy their company. Let’s face it: we are with you  a lot between the planning and the wedding day and even afterwards creating albums and designing for you. So LOVE your vendors.

What or who motivates you?

I am super motivated by fashion, big cities, slick commercials, exotic locations, color, and music. My mind’s eye is constantly hungry and searching for things that make me feel something extraordinary. If I am impacted by it I want to know how I can incorporate it into my craft. How can I capture angles and melodies with my camera? I am super inspired by my amazing children, and they are the fire in my heart but the world as it is the fire in my soul.

What do you like to do when you are away from work?

Besides spending time with my kids and my husband, I LOVE to travel. If I could I would travel most of the year (many would say I already do). But experiencing new environments, people, food, and cultures is just the most amazing thing in the world.

One of my absolute passions is mission work with organizations like Operation Smile. Being able to travel to locations, work with people and children in need and capture the entire experience with my camera is the best thing in the world.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?

You might be surprised to know that I have my degree in Political Science and International Affairs and always thought that I would go into law or politics. I worked at the State Capitol for the Speaker of the House of Delegates and then later on numerous political campaigns. I worked with Jamie Hayes for 5 years before I ever picked up a real camera and started taking pictures. But once I started I never looked back!
