Today, we are excited to introduce you to one of the youngest people we know in the wedding industry!  Hunter Holden is the Events Coordinator with Homemades by Suzanne at the John Marshall.  We love her passion for the wedding industry!

Tell us about your company!

Homemades by Suzanne is a Richmond-based catering company started over 25 years ago in Ashland by Suzanne Wolstenholme. About 3 years ago, we expanded our offices to the Historic John Marshall Hotel during its $80 million dollar renovation, and we are now the exclusive caterer for the venue. We provide delicious food and staffing for any event held here from weddings to corporate events, birthdays and more!

How did you get started in this business?

Previously, I was in retail management (with little-to-no catering or event coordination experience). Suzanne was a customer of mine who thought I would make a good addition to her team here at the John Marshall. Although I have only been with the company since early December, I am enjoying the change very much and can’t wait for all the fun events we have planned for this year.

What differentiates you from other businesses in your field?

I would say our style and history differentiates us from other businesses in our field. Not only do we provide classic homemade options for lunch, but we can offer a variety of selections for catered events as well! We are even happy to incorporate old family recipes or a guest’s favorite meal into our menu. In addition, the John Marshall was the first hotel in Richmond, so its unique history alone sets us apart from the rest! The building still houses the original roof-top marquee, reminiscent of times when it still functioned as a hotel, welcoming stars such as Elvis Presley and Elizabeth Taylor. Inside are two gorgeous ballrooms, which radiate Southern charm and truly embody the essence of old school Hollywood glamour.

Why do you like working with weddings?

I love working with weddings because I get to play a role in making a bride’s special day even MORE special. I really enjoy finalizing all of the small details and watching it all unfold!

From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?

The best advice I can offer to engaged couples is to plan! Make sure you have even the smallest details ironed out before your big day so there are no last minute questions or concerns 5 minutes before the ceremony starts. That being said, I think it’s really smart to appoint someone you trust to help you plan, especially if you do not have a planner or coordinator. That way, if others have questions leading up to the big day, they will have someone else to contact other than the bride or groom.

What or who motivates you?

I would say I am motivated by my surroundings! The John Marshall is an indescribable architectural masterpiece, and working in this beautiful environment on a daily basis is definitely a gentle reminder of how blessed I am to have such a neat job.

What do you like to do when you are away from work?

When I’m away from work I enjoy being “PINspired” by Pinterest, taking my two dogs to the river, and curling up to read a copy of Richmond Weddings, of course! 😉

What would we be surprised to learn about you?

I think you would be surprised to learn that I am only 20 years old – pretty young for the wedding industry!
