Richmond Wedding Vendor Spotlight: Hunter Henkel Photography
Tell us a little about your company!
I began photographing weddings while working at the Richmond Times-Dispatch newspaper while I pursued my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Film from Virginia Commonwealth University. My first weddings were captured on film because digital photography in weddings and photojournalism was just beginning to emerge as an option. Performing a variety of assignments as a freelance photographer I legally established Hunter Henkel Photography in 2000.
How did you get started in this business?
The photo bug bit me in junior high school where I struggled to not only capture a photograph but then to produce an image in the darkroom. In spite of this challenge, I was still drawn to the art. My high school is frequently rented for fashion shoots and movies. With the on-location fashion shoots and my discovery of the work of photographers like Annie Leibovitz and Sebastião Salgado, I become enamored with photography and became the go-to girl for pictures for years to follow wherever I went.
Why do you like working with weddings?
My approach to weddings is similar to photographing for a news organization – unobtrusive documentation. Raw and full of emotion as each couple’s story is different and unique.
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
Invest in a planner – if not for the process, definitely at least for the day of your wedding.
How far in advance should couples book your services?
As soon as you know I am the one! After significantly decreasing my photography services when my son was born in 2011, I began marketing in 2016 with just Richmond Weddings and within 1 week I booked 4 weddings!
What inspired you the most / where do you find inspiration?
In general, I love print magazines! Current events, select entertainment & celebrity, fashion (big fan of Condé Nast publications), food & cooking (I can’t cook though, as my son says whenever I cook the smoke detectors go off! Luckily, I married to a very talented chef!), health & fitness, lifestyle and travel.
During a wedding, I am inspired by the “stage” the couple sets – choice of venue, lighting, details and most of all the emotions which unfold by the couple and their guests throughout the wedding day.
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
I cherish the moments that I get to spend with my family as life passes by so quickly.
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I am a former English riding equestrian who learned to ride in the middle of New York City!
