Richmond Wedding Vendor Spotlight: Make It Posh
Sarah Ntouskas, the owner of Make It Posh, has serious Southern style that makes her such a fun, fabulous wedding planner! Her advice for engaged couples is some of the best I’ve heard yet!
Tell us a little about your company!
We are a boutique wedding planning company based out of RVA. We put emphasis on your experience. We want to make planning your wedding as enjoyable as possible. Our goal is to anticipate your every need and accommodate it before you even think to ask!
How did you get started in this business?
Like most people who have the pleasure of doing what they love, I didn’t plan on being an event planner! It’s something I fell into. I have always loved to entertain and got my feet wet in college. I was involved in planning alumni events, fundraisers and parties. When the girls started getting married, I started planning weddings, and oh boy . . . those weddings were so different from weddings today!
After college, I went to work for a Fortune 500 company as a project manager and joined the planning committee to plan all of the corporate events like company picnics, team building outings, off-site visits, holiday parties, etc. As the company grew, so did the number of events, and the volunteer planning committee grew into a corporate planner position which I was ever so happy to fill! Then all the girls in my office started getting engaged around the same time I did, and before I knew it, I wasn’t just planning my own wedding, but six weddings! Wedding planning became my hobby until I was fortunate enough to make it my business!
What’s your favorite wedding story?
Oh, how do you choose just one?! My favorite weddings are the ones that include VERY personal details. I had a groom that was part of an Acapella group at UVA. He organized the group who provided back up vocals while he serenaded his bride just before their first dance. It was the most touching moment to witness. I felt like I was in a scene from a movie.
Why do you like working with weddings?
There is no better feeling than when a couple chooses you to play such an important role in their wedding!
What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a bride and how did you resolve it?
A recent bride of mine lost her mom unexpectedly three months before her wedding. I couldn’t make it better for her, but we sat on the couch and cried together and thought of ways to make her mom feel present at her wedding.
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
Don’t skimp on the photography and videography. I know it’s sometimes hard to budget for the cost, but if you can build it into your budget, don’t choose a photographer solely based on price. Choose someone who produces great images that you will treasure for a lifetime.
Videography is often passed on because of the expense and most couples don’t feel that they will watch the video enough to justify the cost. I recently lost my dad, and my mom passed away a few years ago. The first thing I did was look for the wedding album and their video. It’s one of the only videos I have of them and it’s more precious than gold to be able to hear their voices and see their smiles.
How far in advance should couples book your services?
12-18 months at minimum. It takes an average of 300 hours to plan a wedding. If you come see us in those beginning stages, we can help you streamline that planning and help you stay on budget. You can usually pay for our services with the savings we’ll help you attain if you contact us in the beginning stages of your planning.
What inspired you the most / where do you find inspiration?
I’m inspired most by my clients and the people I meet. It’s too easy to lose touch with each other through social media and get lost on the internet. I find inspiration in talking to people about their experiences, likes, dislikes, and opinions. It always leads to good conversation.
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
I love to travel!! That’s not totally separate from work since I travel for weddings! I also love to decorate and create anything pretty. From re-decorating our house to designing home projects to flower arranging, I love it all. I suppose that’s what makes me such a good wedding planner. I love creating pretty things! I also ride horse and have been riding since I was 3 years old, and I love the water. If I could live on a boat off the coast of Europe with my horse, fresh flowers and decorate, I think that would be my heaven.
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I don’t like chocolate! WHAT?! Yup. You heard me right. I don’t like chocolate. I’ll take blondies over brownies. Peanut butter over chocolate chip and caramel over chocolate sauce any day.
