Soothe Day-Of Nerves
By Paula Clark Ramirez with Historic Mankin Mansion
Even when you are certain your marriage is meant to be, it’s totally natural and normal to experience a surge of nervous energy on your wedding day. Knowing that you’re not alone isn’t always enough, however. Fortunately, for the couple that genuinely wants to enjoy every moment of their big day, there are many ways to help soothe day-of nerves.
Hire a Mobile Massage Artist
Is there anything more relaxing than a great professional massage? If you plan to see each other before the wedding, you might plan a couple’s massage in the morning so you know you’re starting your day tension-free. If you are saving the big reveal for the aisle, book individual sessions or enjoy massages with your wedding party. Even simple face, neck, and hand massages will help relieve your anxiety and give you an overall sense of well-being.
Spend the Morning at a Spa
The serenity of a day spa can be magical. Book your hair and makeup services at a full-service salon- spa and spend the hours before your ceremony in the perfect environment to help calm your nerves. Invite only those close friends or family members who keep you relaxed. You can always make appointments for your wedding party and other loved ones nearby or have stylists provide services at their hotels.
Hire a Yoga Instructor
If you find yoga centering in your daily life, it can certainly help you channel your nerves into more constructive energy on your wedding day. Plan an early-morning yoga session for you and your wedding party. Do be kind and make it an invitation, not a requirement. Not everyone is ready to start your wedding day in a headstand and still be able to walk down the aisle or dance the night away!
Plan a Low-Impact Outing
Granted, low-impact will mean different things to different people. You might find a round of golf, an early-morning bike ride, or a brisk hike relaxing. Or rent kayaks and enjoy a peaceful paddle through the city. Even a relaxing walk through one of the area’s scenic parks can help get out just enough energy without causing over-exertion. Just be extra cautious and apply sunscreen generously, stay hydrated, and don’t allow your nerves to push you to overdo it. The goal is serenity, not injury.
Make a Great Plan and Stick to It
One of the best ways to induce calm on a wedding day is simply to have a really good plan in place. Spend the months and weeks before your wedding choosing professionals you trust, accepting their guidance and advice, and empowering them to create a day that is perfect for you and your guests. Erase your reservations about potential problems and unexpected crises by hiring capable professionals you know will get the job done.
Ultimately, no matter how many relaxation techniques, massage artists, yogis, spiritual guides, salon professionals, or even vetted wedding professionals you surround yourself with on your wedding day, you’re likely to still feel some measure of nervousness. Know that this is what makes each moment so much more special and memorable down the line. Embrace the energy and let it heighten your senses just enough that you never forget the little things, and how excited you both were on this first day of the rest of your lives.
