Vendor Spotlight | Cathy with Lone Oak Estates in Stony Creek, VA
We are excited to introduce you to one of our newest venues to join the Richmond Weddings™ Family! Meet Cathy Dancy, Owner & CEO of Lone Oak Estates in Stony Creek, VA
How did you get to where you are now?
Simple answer, I’m not afraid to work. I started working when I was 15 and haven’t slowed down yet at 48. I have worked in the Human Resources arena since I was 17 and have loved every minute of it. It has fed my deep need to help others any way I can. I believe that drive comes from my faith. Within my HR career, party planning was always present. Whenever someone would ask me what I would do if I was not in Human Resources I always responded with “I’d be a party planner.” My family now owns our own outdoor event company, planning and/or supporting events for others. Dream come true!
What makes you or your business stand out and why should a couple hire you?
My family has been on the lookout for a place to build our venue for a couple of years. It took only moments of seeing the property to know it was something different and would create amazing backdrops for any picture no matter where someone stood. The 200-ft dam, 60-ft iron bridge, pier and the surrounding woods provide endless opportunities for that perfect shot. Outside of the stunning property, my family is dedicated to you and your special day. We’d love to get to know you, your preferences and find a way to make your special moment even better than you can imagine.
What’s your favorite thing about working in the wedding industry?
I love that every wedding creates an entirely new feeling and look. The color choices, the decorations used, the time of day, lighting decisions, music selections, presentation of vows all lead to a unique event that is all theirs.
What’s a unique tip and best piece of advice you tell your couples?
Make sure you have someone at the wedding that is in charge of “watching” things so the wedding party, more specifically the wedding couple, doesn’t have to deal with people who’ve had a little too much to drink or aren’t getting along with someone else at the wedding. Also, make sure the wedding is 100% yours and not what everyone else expects or wants. If you want to wear tennis shoes, so go for it. If you want to wear a purple dress, do it. It’s your day, make it yours.
What’s your favorite moment during a wedding?
100% when the couple sees each other for the first time walking down the aisle. It is such a pure moment!
What are your favorite wedding trends right now?
My family is obsessed with the use of wood. We entered the rustic world far earlier than most. I’m so excited to see wood chips and slabs being used in so many creative ways from party favors, to tiered cupcake holders, to guest books.
Tell us a funny/awesome story from a wedding you’ve worked?
I can think of two quick stories: (1) I once saw a young boy act as the flower kid, and he did not seem too excited about it. He threw the rose petals with vigor and with a major attitude. He even threw the basket when the petals were gone. Everyone was laughing til they cried. (2) At a recent wedding the drone got stuck on an outside tree limb and a guest ended up in the tree to shake it loose.
How do you de-stress?
Okay don’t laugh, but I just happen to love cleaning out closets and reorganizing them. Every now and then when my husband can see I’m stressing over something, he looks me in the eyes and gently suggest I go clean out a closet. Just hearing the words settles me right down.
What’s your favorite food/dish/cuisine?
I enjoy a good spaghetti dinner, but honestly, I could eat cereal at every meal and not skip a beat. I’d never turn down a Krispy Kreme donut either. Just saying.
If you were to meet any celebrity, who would it be?
I enjoy hanging with people who are real. I would love to spend time with Jennifer Garner. I have a thousand Alias questions to ask her, as well as, I’d like to try some of that good food she’s been cooking online during the pandemic.
Describe your perfect day
Sundays always start with church and then hopefully continues with our family time at Lone Oak Estates enjoying some fishing, the sounds of the water flowing over the dam, feeding the fish and just laughing with each other.
What are your top three favorite movies?
The Shack, A Quiet Place, Jumanji (the newer ones)
What’s a fun or unusual fact about you?
I love yellow Laffy Taffy and my kids got me a huge bucket of them for Christmas, and I was in Heaven! Haven’t quite made it through the bucket, but I’m steadily working on it.
What’s the coolest thing you’re working on now?
We are in the process of getting county clearance to build a treehouse on our land to rent out. We even bought tree connections from Treehouse Masters, the TV show. So excited!
What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
I have limited experience with concerts but my favorite one ended up being fake. It was Milli Vanilli. They offered to refund us the next day when it became public knowledge that the group was lip syncing. I didn’t take the money because I had a great time.
Do you love to travel? If so, what are some must-see destinations?
I do love to travel. Oddly enough it’s not the fancy and expensive places I want to see but instead, I want to see all of the unusual things across the US like the biggest roll of yarn. I like things that are different.
Do you have a pet?
I am definitely a pet lover. I currently have a 14-year old pup names Kola. He was a rescue dog that we picked up at Target having a rescue event. Kola is a combination of a German Shephard and Chow. He has the most wonderful and loving personality and enjoys ripping toys apart so he can pull out the squeaker inside.
What is your favorite season of the year and why?
It’s changed over the years. 10 years ago, I would have said summer. I was the person who would lay in one place, not move and suck in as much sun as I could get and then flip over hours later. Now, after a few hot flashes, I lean more to the Spring. The weather is warming up, the grass is turning green, flowers are popping out and people start spending more time outside. It’s a beautiful transition time that leads to two additional months of beautiful and vibrant colors.
What’s your favorite family tradition?
Our family is often going in many different directions, so I personally love our Christmas Eve time together, where we watch movie, play games, laugh a lot and are all under the same roof for more than a few hours. I get to wake up in the morning and see all of their beautiful faces. It warms my heart every time.
Anything else you want our followers to know?
Creativity lives and breathes in our family. From problem solving, to unique structures (treehouse, pavilion, bridges, mini-cabins, etc.) to events, we always find a fun and unique way to meet the need. We can’t be any more excited than we are to introduce Lone Oak Estates to each you!
