Meet Emily Alwood, Photographer with EmmiClaire PhotographyComing from a photography family, Emily found her passion early. Read how she finds the perfect angle and lighting to make sure you look picture perfect on your Richmond wedding day.

How did you get to where you are now?
I grew up around cameras, as my dad is a professional photographer, and was more interested in how the camera worked as a child as opposed to being the model behind it. When I was an elementary and middle school teacher, I started taking clients as my side job as a photographer, eventually leading me to my full-time business.

What makes you or your business stand out and why should a couple hire you?
I am unique and creative. I want to play with all of the lighting and angles for extra special moments and memories. I’m outgoing and fun (clients say so!) and want to bring all ideas out onto the table to make your best day ever even better!

What’s your favorite thing about working in the wedding industry?
I enjoy meeting others! From wedding guests to other wedding vendors. It’s a great time all around, how can you not have fun at a wedding?!

What’s a unique tip you tell your couples?
Walk slowly, look at each other, and take it all in!

What’s your best piece of advice for couples planning a wedding?
Do your research. And if you think “I don’t need that” you most likely won’t!

What’s your favorite moment during a wedding?
I love seeing the eyes of the couple when they are gazing into one another’s eyes at the altar. I can feel their love.

What are your favorite wedding trends right now?
Charcuterie boards will always be my favorite trend. I’m obsessed with cheese and meats and love seeing couples that have the same love for it!

What’s a funny/awesome story from a wedding you’ve worked?
One of my couples went to take the top layer of their cake off on their own and it plopped over onto the cake table. There was something holding it in place with the bottom layer. Everyone, including the couple, was cracking up and they saved it with minimal damage!

How do you de-stress?
Gardening, hanging out with my husband, Ben, and pup, Tux. Also, playing my newest favorite video game Animal Crossing, and bike riding.

What’s your favorite food/cuisine?
Authentic Asian food…but I do love Italian too.

If you were to meet any celebrity, who would it be?
Oprah!

What would your perfect Saturday be like?
No alarm clock, head over to the Farmer’s market with an iced coffee and grab some brunch with friends. Later, have BBQ on the back patio.

What are your top three favorite movies?
Mrs. Doubtfire, Dumb & Dumber, and Home Alone

What’s a fun/unusual fact about you?
I won a car on The Price is Right in 2015! Yes, I still drive it!

What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?
I’m working on getting a wall in my home studio painted to use as a backdrop for a variety of clients.

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
That’s tough to decide. Either Florence + The Machine or Mumford & Sons. I love them both so much.

Do you love to travel? If so, what are some must-see destinations?
Yes! Climbing Mount Fuji in Japan is my first recommendation and if you can’t climb it…just go to Japan!

Do you have a pet?
Yes, my two-year-old cockapoo, Tux. He’s my best boy. I love taking him swimming!

What is your most-used emoji?
🥰

What’s your favorite season and why?
I grew up in Florida so I didn’t really know seasons until I moved to Virginia! Spring is my absolute favorite because I love seeing new growth and birth in the world after the cold winter.

What’s your favorite family tradition?
Summer vacation…you just have to go somewhere!

Anything else you want our followers to know?
EmmiClaire originated back in 1998 when my dad created an AOL account for me. When I went full time with my business, I decided to use it to differentiate my brand to have a story behind the name. Some of my clients now call me EmmiClaire, which I kind of like!
