What makes you or your business stand out and why should a couple hire you?
We are a husband and wife planning team! My husband is my partner/assistant for all our weddings. He’s been a groomsman 8 times and of those 8, a best man 4 times on top of being a groom at one time himself. He is really great at helping out on the groom’s side of things which makes us able to offer an additional touch that most planning teams may not have. Since we are married ourselves – we 100% understand what a couple goes through during the planning process and we treat every single wedding just as we would our own.
What’s a weird/unusual tip you tell your couples?
When up at the altar HOLD HANDS the entire time. It will feel weird, your hands will probably sweat, but it will make your ceremony look much better to your guests and in your photos! If you don’t hold hands, it can look SUPER awkward. I’m also super on top of making sure my couples eat! It is SO important that you eat throughout the day. Between the swiftness of the day and the excitement, it is super common to forget to eat. I always carry snacks in my emergency kit for my couples. This last part isn’t necessarily advice, but my husband and I take all phones from the wedding party before the ceremony – phone outlines show up in suit/tux pockets and you do NOT want to be the person who ruins a wedding ceremony with a ringing phone.
What’s your favorite thing about what you do?
I love the togetherness of families that you feel on a wedding day. And the happiness from the couple is almost contagious. That moment RIGHT before the bride enters the ceremony is by far my favorite. I always snap a picture of the bride with my phone right before I open the door for her to enter and send it to her after the wedding.
If you care to share, how did you get to where you are now?
Well, I’ve always LOVED event planning. I planned all my high school events – pep rallies, dances, and so on. In college, any club or organization I was in I always took on the role of event planning. My mom once told me I should be a wedding planner but I didn’t think it was really a job unless you did celebrity weddings. Once my friends and family members were getting married, I started taking on “coordinator” type roles for their weddings. This evolved into me assisting established planners around Virginia which then pushed me to create Simply Charmed.
What’s something every couple should know before getting married?
I have two somethings – one as a former bride and one as a wedding planner. The former bride in me wants couples to always remember your wedding is ONE day, your marriage is for life. Sometimes it’s easy to care so much about the wedding day and forget what its REALLY all about.
On that same note, the wedding planner in me wants couples to know – your guests will remember the food, the music, and the overall atmosphere, don’t get overly caught up in the tiny details (leave that to a planner ;). The best thing you can do is make your wedding show the personality of you and your future spouse.
What’s your go-to spot to eat in RVA?
I am a FOODIE. One of my favorite dinner spots is Millie’s. If I go out for dinner and drinks, you can find me at 3 Monkeys or Social 52. Long before wedding planning days, I worked at 3 Monkeys so it’s a little nostalgic for me.
What did you want to be when you were little? Astronaut? Firefighter? Wedding Planner?
All the above at some point. I wanted to be a lawyer and then a teacher when I got older. I ended up actually working in the education programs at the city jail as my first salaried job out of college for a couple of years.
What was your first job?
I worked at the Village Grill in Chester VA. I was NOT good at it!
What did you eat for breakfast this morning?
A breakfast sandwich from Stella’s Market on East Grace.
What do you like to do when you are away from work? Or where is your happy place?
With family! A lot of my family lives far away so I really value time with them when I get it. The family that lives close by, we get together for dinner pretty much weekly and I love that.
What is your newest Netflix obsession? Or what is your favorite TV show?
Dead to Me! Netflix just announced season two and I’m super excited! I also love New Amsterdam, it’s such a feel-good show.
What’s the coolest thing you’re working on now?
Well, I made a baby! His name is Theodore, he’s two months old now, he’s pretty cool 🙂 For my business, however, I am working on creating more content and resources to help my couples. Every wedding I learn something new I want to add.
What would be in your dream sandwich? (The sky is the limit!)
My brother and I are the only people I know who love this – Nutella, peanut butter and banana!
What’s your go-to dance move?
I can do the awkward dad at a BBQ type moves pretty well 🙂
