Real Richmond Wedding: Brittany and Dwight at The Renaissance
Brittany and Dwight
June 10, 2017
How They Met:
Brittany and Dwight first met in 2007 while they were both attending Norfolk State University. The two had mutual friends, but only crossed paths a couple of times. It seemed unlikely that the two would connect when Brittany transferred to VCU in 2009, but through social media, they remained friends.
Their love story continued to be a collection of missed encounters. They finally crossed paths again on July 4th, 2011 while Brittany was on a girls trip to Virginia Beach. Brittany elaborates, “The beach was PACKED, but we found a spot and laid out our towels behind a large family group. It didn’t take long for us to realize that family group in front of us…was Dwight’s family!” He came over to talk to Brittany and the two finally exchanged numbers.
They continued to talk for months, until their first date in Shockoe Bottom, where they planned a New Year’s Eve mini getaway. And after that weekend they were official.
Dwight asked Brittany to be his wife on December 12, 2015, in front of the Christmas Tree in The National Harbor, MD. Every year around this time the two would do a nice dinner and enjoy a night out. They usually did it closer to Christmas Eve, but that year, Dwight wanted to do something a little different.
“After dinner, he said we were going to the bar for some drinks. As he walked me up the stairs, and we came around the corner…I saw my best friends, his sisters, and cousins — it was then I knew, this was the moment!!” In front of all her family and friends, Brittany said, “yes!”
Brittany and Dwight picked The Renaissance because it had everything they were looking for in a wedding venue. “We were going for a classic ‘Old Hollywood’ look and wanted to have the ceremony and reception in the same place.” Both have large families and a lot of friends, and The Renaissance had more than enough room. “I also loved the location…right in the heart of Richmond! A place I walked by numerous times as a child and while in college, now the place I would be getting married.” The Renaissance made planning a breeze. “We were able to tell them what colors, chairs, lights, food etc. we wanted and they provided!
Their wedding colors were royal purple and bronze gold. “The royal purple goes with almost every skin tone and I wanted to go with a shade that complimented all of my ladies!” The men wore light gray suits to keep things cool during their midsummer wedding.
Brittany explains, “Two things about the both of us, we love food and we love a good time!” They opted out of the traditional sit-down dinner (to give their guests more time to party), instead, they served heavy Hors ‘d oeuvres throughout the night. They even had a mashed potato station where guests could build their own loaded mashed potatoes into a fancy martini glass! For their favors, the two gave out personalized cups and napkins complete with their motto of the day, “Drunk in Love.”
Favorite Part of the Day:
“I am unsure if we can pick just one moment of the day – as the whole day was an amazing experience. To be surrounded by so many people who love and support our union is such an amazing feeling that nothing can top. We are so blessed to have so many friends and family as our ‘village’ and also so blessed to be able to celebrate with that village. Best day of our lives. So far!”
“The United States Postal Service! More than half of the invitations got returned back to us and when trying to resend, some people didn’t get their invitation at all.”
Best Piece of Advice:
“Remember it’s about the two of you! At all times! Live in the moment!! Keep in mind on the day of that it’ll all fly by very quickly – so take it all in!”
