From Blank Canvas to Wedding Wonderland!
By David Darby with Rent-E-Quip
Whether it’s the significance of a historical property, the beauty of a waterfront overlook, or the comfort of a backyard where you spent your childhood, there’s just something special about an outdoor wedding. But choosing an outdoor venue does present different, sometimes challenging, factors. A good amount of times you will need to build your wedding venue from the ground up. Have no fear, starting from a blank canvas gives you tons of options! Here are a few things to consider when planning your outdoor wedding:
Unfortunately, the only thing you can’t predict with certainty is the weather for your wedding day. That’s where tents come into play! Not only do tents provide the functional role of providing shelter for your wedding but they also act as the canvas in which you paint the design. Starting with the tent itself you have a few different options:
Pole tents feature flowing canopies with no framework for the tradeoff of having the center pole(s) take up room in the middle of the tent.
Frame tents are self-supported structures that allow for a completely open floor plan and can be used with standard white canopies or even see through clear panels.
Sailcloth tents tend to ramp up the wow factor with their translucent canopies and starburst styled structure points. If you really want to put on a show, illuminate this tent with patterned lighting that will shine through both sides and into the night sky.
Tents of any style can be enclosed with a combination of walls and doorways to be either heated or equipped with air conditioning, depending on your needs. If a fully enclosed tent feels too much like an indoor venue, leave the walls open! You can even bring the outside in with floral chandeliers and trees that wrap around the legs and center poles of the tent. A majority of tents can also have the aluminum poles switched to wooden poles for an earthy feel. Maybe you are looking for a more formal design? Try utilizing fabric ceilings and temporary flooring to make your guests feel like they’ve been transported to another world.
Guest and Vendor Amenities
In addition to all of your design and decor choices, you also want to keep in mind some of the often-overlooked necessities such as restroom trailers, catering tents, or generators. When you meet with your local rental company it is always helpful to bring a list of your vendor needs. Some caterers provide all the equipment needed for an outdoor event while some will need you to rent items such as a food heating cabinet and other food-related items. If you are planning on having a band, you may need to have a stage or raised platform for the players to stand on.
Having an outdoor wedding can be both challenging and rewarding; thankfully you have plenty of talented vendors that can help you along the way! Some rental companies will visit with you on-site prior to booking to check your venue for any spatial constraints as well as produce custom 3D layouts. Most rental companies will also have showrooms and plenty of pictures to show all options and even allow you to get hands-on prior to the big day! With only a few trips to your rental store of choice, you will have a solid grasp on the seemingly overwhelming process in no time!
