Real Richmond Wedding: Cherrelle and Thomas at Maymont + The Place at Innsbrook
Cherrelle and Thomas
May 19, 2019
How They Met
Cherrelle and Thomas met when they were just 11 and 12 years old, in 2002 after their families moved next door to each other. The relationship started as a friendship between two shy kids and eventually blossomed into a young love in high school after years of keeping their feelings a secret! They were officially boyfriend and girlfriend on November 29, 2006.
Thomas had planned to propose on Valentine’s day but after buying the ring he just couldn’t wait! The next day after sharing the news with both of their mothers he decided to propose. Cherrelle and her mother were headed out of town that day so he asked them to stop by on their way out so he could say goodbye. He explains, “I sat to take a picture with her before she left, and while our mothers were capturing the moment, I got up, turned around, got down on one knee, and while on the verge of tears, I told Cherrelle that I loved her and I asked her if she would marry me…she said YES!”
It was important to them that their happiness was the core of every wedding decision they made. From the beginning, they had always envisioned an outdoor ceremony. The moment they visited Maymont, it’s history and royal feeling sealed the deal.
While they loved the Italian Garden they said their vows in, they decided to host everyone for the reception at The Place at Innsbrook. Space, convenience, and amazing in-house catering made it the perfect spot to end the night!
On the day of the wedding, the ceremony was short and sweet. Cherrelle arrived in a horse-drawn carriage and walked down the aisle to “Here I Stand” by Usher, a song she pledged she would walk down the aisle to when she was 16 years old. They were both overcome with emotion and exchanged their heartfelt vows to each other.
For colors, they went with mint, ivory, and gold; a perfect trio for their spring wedding. Decorations were kept to a minimum and a big emphasis was placed on florals and lighting. Cherrelle created all of the centerpieces for each table out of artificial flowers and implemented string lighting, floating candles, and tea lights throughout.
They really wanted the small, personal details as well as their entrance to leave a lasting impression on guests. “Guests with reserved seats were met with wedding bell place card holders and hand-written place cards in their seats… I personally made over 100 paper fans with Thomas and I’s initials and a bible scripture on the front to help them stay cool during the ceremony.”
The food on their big day was so good they still get compliments on it! Catering was provided by The Place at Innsbrook and it surely did not disappoint. Delicious hors d’oeuvres were followed by a giant buffet filled with foods like smothered pork chops, roast beef, and chicken piccata. Instead of a traditional cake, they opted for a tiered bundt cake, a fun, non-traditional route!
Favorite Part of the Day
“My absolute favorite part of the day was listening to my husband recite his vows. Anyone who knows Thomas knows he’s a very strong, tough man, not many people get to see his softer side. As I came down the aisle, he was in tears and that emotion was just so beautiful to me… Something special that he did while sharing his vows, is that he had small messages for both my mother and father. So, he took a brief pause from sharing his feelings and intentions to me and he turned directly to them and promised to protect me and cherish me, and he thanked them for creating the woman that was designed to be his soulmate. My husband’s favorite part of our wedding day was the celebration in the limousine with the entire wedding party after the ceremony. He loved how well my bridesmaids and his groomsmen hit it off and they all have always been so supportive of our relationship.”
“My father became very ill in December of 2018, he was admitted to VCU hospital in mid-December and faced numerous health scares…I didn’t know if my father would be here to give me away at my wedding…It was amazing how determined my dad was once he returned home, he worked so hard to build his strength up and get back to his usual self. There were many challenges and disappointments, but he’s truly a miracle to look at. He not only showed up, but he walked me and gave me away to my future husband.”
Best Piece of Advice
“Make your wedding day and your marriage something to enjoy, it’s not just about the “look” of things. Be patient with yourself with planning, and if you want to take small projects into our own hands, go for it! Things made with love will mean so much more to you and your guests.”
