Richmond Wedding Vendor Spotlight: Zahara’s Events & Design
Meet Keitha, the owner and lead designer of Zahara’s Events & Design! She has some wedding planning advice that really surprised us, but we LOVE IT!
Tell us a little about your company!
ZED is a full service floral, event design and management company. Our goal is to create a flawless experience for you and your guests. Zahara’s Events & Design conceptualizes, designs, plans, and oversees all key visual elements of an event. This allows for unparalleled quality and ensures that the vision is cohesive. By intimately learning about our clients, we are able to infuse meaningful details and thoughtful design.
How did you get started in this business?
I started talking about it. You’d actually be quite surprised how when you start talking about something, you speak it into existence. I have always had a passion for art & design. My love of creating beautiful spaces has always been with me since I can remember, but if we went back a decade ago, my focus was more on interior design.
I was at a crossroad in my life and looking for a career change that allowed both creativity and flexibility. Entertaining family and friends at my home, especially around the holiday season, had become something I looked forward to over and over again. With a love for fresh flowers and a passion for interior design, I started telling people that I wanted to start my own business planning events.
I’m definitely someone that likes to crawl before I run; I like to know all the steps, from A to Z, before I actually go into something, so I emailed and called about 20 event planners to try to get some type of internship/mentorship. No one wanted to give me the time of day, so I read tons of books, took some courses and put ads on Craigslist offering to do weddings for free. I did a few free weddings and each couple wrote and posted public reviews online about their experience with me. From there, I was able to go into business based on referrals.
What differentiates you from other businesses in your field?
I approach each event as its own unique experience, which inspires me and allows me to be out of the box.. My connections with my vendors and clients are heartfelt, and the relationships have turned into lifelong friendships. I have an intentional way of designing unique events specifically to fit our clients style and personality. Our goal is for you to walk into your wedding day and say, “This Is So Us!”
Why do you like working with weddings?
I love creating weddings that are unique to the bride and groom. I want their guests to walk in and experience something so special that it can’t be recreated. My favorite part of the wedding day is the moment just before my bride walks down the aisle. Experiencing that sweet moment together always makes my heart smile!
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
If you are going to splurge on one thing, splurge on your memories. Photography is how you remember your day and what will keep your memories alive. The happiness you feel with having the extra-large centerpieces or that perfect venue will be nothing compared to the day your photos arrive. If you are unhappy with the photos because you wanted to spend the budget elsewhere, you will regret it more than you can imagine, trust me on this! Get 5 less peonies in all of your centerpieces and one less piece band to get the best photographer for your budget.
What or who motivates you?
My family and clients motivate me. The love and the support I receive pushes me to be better everyday.
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
When I’m not designing the most incredible spaces and memories for my couples, you can find me in the kitchen testing new recipes while having crazy dance parties with my kids and avoiding folding laundry by watching HGTV or snuggling my pup.
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I have an obsession with shoes and a perfectly crafted cocktail!
