Richmond Wedding Vendor Spotlight: Boathouse Weddings
Meet Susan Birkenheier, Event Coordinator for the Boathouse at Sunday Park!
How did you get started in this business?
I studied PR in college, and then my first job out of college was as a hostess at a restaurant in Downtown Chicago. While there, I had the opportunity to with the event coordinator and soon realized that I wanted to work in events and started my first internship soon after.
What’s your favorite wedding story?
I don’t have a favorite wedding story, but I have been honored to be a part of the gay weddings I have coordinated over the past two years. I think any LGBTQ wedding is such a wonderful and inspiring story for us all as equal human beings.
Why do you like working with weddings?
I love to get to work with people during one of the happiest times of their life. It’s a true privilege. I also love that everyone has a different story to tell, so it keeps things interesting!
What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a wedding and how did you resolve it?
I was working with a very green DJ who was unequipped to do their job. I intervened by trying to help and facilitate many of the Dj’s tasks (introductions, songs choice, etc.) and just did whatever I could salvage the experience for the guests.
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
Do your research, be confident in the people you hire and trust them to do their jobs.
What inspired you the most/where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration all around me, but mostly in my clients who are usually always so positive. It helps keep me in check when I am having a tough day/week.
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
Play with my dogs, listen to music and cook.
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I’m a total slob at home!
Honestly, we don’t believe someone as organized as Susan could be a slob! 😉 If you’d like to learn more about Susan and the crew at Boathouse Weddings, please visit www.boathouserva.com.
