Richmond Wedding Vendor Spotlight: Emerald Events by Nilsa
Meet Nilsa, the owner of Emerald Events by Nilsa!
Tell us a little about your company!
Emerald Events by Nilsa specializes in creating a unique and memorable event for the client as well as the client’s guests. We offer day of planning, partial planning, and full planning. We also offer consultation services for the bride that just needs direction and help with staying on task. My goal is for my brides to feel like a queen, not just for their wedding day, but throughout their wedding experience. From the time that ring is on their finger, they should be in wedded bliss, not worrying about anything. My team and I work hard to make that a priority.
How did you get started in this business?
I’ve always loved helping friends and family with coordinating their events. The very first family event I fully coordinated went well, but in my mind I saw so many things that I could’ve done better. That is how I got started. I had a whole list of things I know I could’ve improved on and made it my mission to coordinate an event that was seamless without any issues. Years later, I finally got that that opportunity with my first “real” event. I remember the bride emailing me after her wedding. She was so happy with her experience that I knew it was something that I wanted to keep doing.
What’s your favorite wedding story?
I met Amanda and Travis at a vendor show last year. Because we spent so much time together, I thought I knew all I needed to know about the couple. Fast forward to wedding day. During the speech, the maid of honor tells how they met and how she is so happy that Amanda found love again. It turns out Amanda’s first husband passed away. She was left to raise two boys on her own. But how blessed was she to find a man who loved her and her two sons unconditionally. My team and I were all crying! The reason this is my favorite story is because you could see how real their love is. I could never forget this couple and how much they seemed to love each other.
Why do you like working with weddings?
Everyone seems so happy. Of course, with planning a wedding you deal, with some challenging situations, but overall everyone seems so excited. The bride, the groom the family members — everyone seems to be ready to celebrate. Another reason is I love being a wedding planner is that I love to see the bride relax and enjoy her day. I was a bride myself, and I remember being so worried about every detail. I also remember how calm I felt when my team walked in. I knew I could finally relax and enjoy my day. That is the feeling I want all my brides to have when they see us!
What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a bride and how did you resolve it?
I have to say I have been so blessed to have really sweet brides. There is one wedding that comes to mind. The bride chose a beautiful chandelier to hang from the ceremonial arch. Originally, the vendor agreed to have this done. However, as my staff and I were attempting to put up the chandelier, the owner of the venue told us that it was impossible for the chandelier to go up due to possible property damage. After discussing details with the bride, she indicated she would not walk down the aisle if the chandelier was not up. I had to find a way to make it work. I grabbed the staff from the venue, told them to grab a ladder and some tools and we put up the chandelier without damaging the property.
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
When planning your wedding and deciding on a budget, determine which items are the MOST important things to you. This way you can cut on the cost of the other items and splurge on the most important things on your list. This will also help you stay within your budget.
How far in advance should couples book your services?
Ideally, couples should book me at least 5 months in advance. This gives me time to meet with the bride and find out the the details I need to know prior to wedding day. However, in the past I’ve planned a wedding in a 2 months!
What inspires you the most / where do you find inspiration?
I have a love of the craft to create anything beautiful. Part of what I create is the smile on a bride’s face when she sees everything come together. It may sound crazy, but I live for the end of the night when the bride is singing my praises and telling me how happy she is with everything. Believe it or not, I find inspiration from my brides.
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
When I’m away from work, I love to spend time with my husband and family. I also love to travel, read the latest fashion magazines, and indulge in my biggest guilty pleasure — reality TV. It really doesn’t take much to make me happy. A cup of Starbucks coffee, Golden Girls, pink fuzzy slippers, and I’m good to go.
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I have a huge fear of dogs. Most people are dog lovers. I love dogs, I’m just deathly afraid of them. Makes no sense right? Long story short, I had a bad experience as a kid and just never got over it. But with the help of my friends and family members who are avid dog lovers, I’ve grown to love what I am afraid of.
