Meet Matthew Davey (second from the right), Director of Music and Ceremonies with Bow Tied Weddings. He has made a name for his company as one of the top DJ services in the Richmond Area. But for Matthew, it’s still about forming a connection and friendship with each and every couple they meet.

Tell us a little about your company
Bow Tied Weddings is young and fun team of Wedding DJs who are working to make it as easy as possible for a couple to plan their wedding. Having recently partnered with fellow Richmond Weddings™ vendor, Kristine Pringle Photographers, we feel we are getting closer to that goal. We felt that giving couples the option of having their, “Music and Photography, All Bow Tied Together” just made sense.

How did you get started in this business
While our team of young professional Wedding DJs have their own individual experience, Bow Tied Weddings has only been a name since 2015. And while that makes us the fresh face in our category, we have won awards and have over 80 glowing reviews. We strive to offer the best service possible to our couples by ensuring great communication and friendship throughout the planning process and making sure their special day runs smoothly.

What’s your favorite wedding story?
We have so many great weddings, and love all of the couples. One that does come to mind would be Lexi and Scott Frank. They had myself for their wedding and their friend’s Abby and Eamon, had Seth for their wedding, giving a pretty unique Bow Tied connection. I met with Lexi and Scott a couple times for drinks to chat about their wedding details, their dogs Hank and Helga, and a few other non-wedding related topics. They’ve attended our holiday party two years in a row. Two months before the wedding, I get a package in the mail from Hank and Helga with a note saying, “We hope you will wear this to our parents wedding.” It was a bow tie with bulldogs in top hats. Fast forward a couple months after a couple more meetings with food and drinks, and it’s their wedding day. Honey, their wedding planner with Kim Moody Design, came out of maternity leave, just to make sure their wedding was perfect, and because that’s how awesome Lexi and Scott are. They came into the reception with giant cardboard cutouts of Hank and Helga, which was hilarious. We just have some much fun with Lexi and Scott, and are so happy to have them be apart of the Bow Tied Family!

Why do you like working with weddings?
Well, we have many stories like the one above. We love each and every friendship we enter with each and every couple. We love being involved in one of their most memorable days. We love helping them with suggestions, addressing concerns, and doing everything we can to make sure our couples, and their guests, have the time of their lives.

What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a bride and how did you resolve it?
All of our DJs have had a difficult situation to deal with once or twice. Almost all of them involved losing power. Being the resourceful and quick thinking guys we are, we have each managed to save a party that lost power and kept the dance floor rocking.

From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
Teamwork makes the dream work. When we partnered with Kristine Pringle Photographers, we did so because we work really well together. Most of the folks at Richmond Weddings™ have worked together once or twice, and hiring the “friendors” from the Richmond Weddings™ family just means that you are going to get a team of wedding professionals that work really well together, and thus a flawless evening.

How far in advance should couples book your services?
The earlier the better. We book about 12 to 18 months in advance. October is the busiest, followed by September, May, and June. Definitely book those months sooner rather than later. Couples that book us, typically book us right after the venue.

What inspires you the most / where do you find inspiration?
Our inspiration comes from our couples. We love hearing their stories, how they met, how their relationships progressed, the proposal story, and what led them to sitting down with us at our first meeting. We love the numerous meetings we have with them after that, talking in detail about what they want. And we love seeing their excitement on their wedding day. We feed off of their excitement, and their guests’ excitement. All of these things inspire us to do great work.

What do you like to do when you are away from work?
A lot of folks think we only work on the weekends. Well that’s just not true. We are often visiting with venues, meeting with fellow vendors, and sitting down with potential couples and one’s that have already joined the Bow Tied Family. But when we aren’t doing all of that, we like to travel and go on as many adventures as possible. When it’s summer, we may or may not have a regular Pool Day during the week.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?
With all the success we have had over the past couple years, we decided to spin off a marketing consulting business geared to wedding professionals, called Franklin James Consulting. We want to help our fellow wedding vendors have the same kind of success story that we have had. We look forward to continued growth, furthering our relationships with our friendors, and throwing more and more epic dance parties
