Vendor Spotlight: David Darby with Rent-E-Quip
Meet David Darby, Special Event and Tent Specialist with Rent-E-Quip. As a full-service rental company, David and the rest of the team at Rent-E-Quip, will make your wedding dreams come true, no matter the vision!
What makes you or your business stand out and why should a couple hire you?
I believe that the two key factors that set us apart in our industry are the quality of our product & service and the fact that we are a true full-service company.
Being a true full-service rental company means that if you have an open piece of land, be it at a historic plantation, or your own backyard, you now have a wedding venue. We can come in, install a tent with lighting, walls, air conditioning, flooring, doors and the works. Let us decorate it with tables, linens, flatware, dance flooring, and decor. Need additional power supply on-site? We’ve got generators! Is your band requiring a platform? We have stages! Does your caterer need an on-site kitchen? We have ranges, crescors, coolers, and all! — I think you see what I’m getting at! We operate a warehouse in Colonial Heights Virginia with 40,000 square foot of space and carry thousands of unique items. No matter if your event is big or small, we can accommodate!
I think where we really excel is the quality of our service and product. When it comes to wedding rentals, there’s a lot of options, and that means a majority of the time it is up to us to break down the different aspects of rentals and layout comparisons that best fit our client’s needs and expectations. We try to make rentals easy to understand. From 3D CAD layouts to our design studio in which we create the tablescapes prior to the rental we want to make sure our clients are confident with the rentals chosen. We also offer complimentary on-site surveys prior to each large installation to make sure we have all the details nailed down.
For the products themselves, we aim above expectations in quality and our care. You won’t find any folded linens stacked in our warehouse! In addition to top-of-the-line equipment we utilize to service our inventory such as tent washers, burnishers, and polishers, we also hand inspect each and every rental prior to an event.
What’s a weird/unusual tip you tell your couples?
Think outside the box! Our clients surprise us every day with new ideas for our equipment. Margarita glasses used to hold salads? Sure! Cotton candy machines used to create specialty cocktails? Absolutely! Linens re-purposed for wall decor? Why not!
Designing a wedding is a creative endeavor, and there are no rules here!
What’s your favorite thing about what you do?
This is probably going to be a cliché answer for a wedding industry vendor but it’s truly amazing to be involved in one of the most important days of our client’s lives. Being able to listen to their vision and bring it to life is an absolutely amazing experience.
How did you get to where you are?
My father, Warren, started Rent-E-Quip in 2000. I was very privileged to have such a great family business to move into after school. I have always been a creative growing up and once I started working I immediately fell in love with the job and have been passionate about our work ever since.
What’s something every couple should know before getting married
There is no such thing as planning too far in advance! If anything it allows us more opportunity to create custom solutions and make dreams come true!
What’s your go-to spot to eat in RVA?
Ooooo, that’s tough. If I had to choose only one it would probably be Tarrant’s Cafe. The atmosphere is great and the food is even better!
What did you want to be when you were little?
Much to my mom’s displeasure I wanted to be a racecar driver just like my father was when he was younger.
What was your first job?
My first “real” job was actually being a freelance E-Sports coach. Yep, I was paid to play video games… At my peak, I was actually ranked in the top 5,000 players out of 78 Million and contracted hourly to help other teams and individuals try to make it to the big leagues. I did this for about 4 years before quitting to focus on Rent-E-Quip. Turns out E-sports, albeit fun, doesn’t have quite the benefits and stability as a “normal job”
What did you eat for breakfast this morning?
I generally skip breakfast (blasphemy, I know) but did have a great cup of loose leaf Earl Grey tea, it’s how I start most mornings!
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
When away from work I am a thrill seeking. The Wednesday before writing this I actually jumped out of a plane for the first time! You can also find me traveling to obscure countries, SCUBA diving, and road tripping on the weekends.
Where is your happy place?
My happy place would be a tie between the mountains and the ocean. I love being outdoors and in nature. The quieter the better!
What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?
Non-work related: I’m super excited to get my rescue divers certification this winter. That and first-aid training.
Work-related: Sailcloth tents. I can’t wait to see the creations that come out of some of the fall wedding we have on the books. Last year we had an amazing Lord of the Rings themed wedding with custom foliage-patterned lighting from Lighting Professors. I can’t wait to show off what we have in store for this year! (Check your Richmond Wedding’s mag for that feature!)
