Richmond Wedding Venue Spotlight: The Renaissance
Tell us a little about your venue!
The Renaissance is a family owned and operated business that has been putting together beautiful wedding ceremonies and receptions for over 15 years now. We are one of the true all-inclusive facilities that will not only help you with tables, chairs, china, linens, lights, and setup, but we also include parking and a day-of planner to help with all the details.
How did you get started in this business?
I (Tommy) have been planning weddings going into two decades now. I started working with events on the Annabel Lee Cruise boat, and then managed a banquet facility in the West End helping plan weddings and other events. I came to work with Jon at the Renaissance a few years later and haven’t looked back since! Chef Jon has been building unforgettable food menus for over 30 years. Having been Marriott trained, he is no stranger to a kitchen, but his manager experience and “Jack of All Trades” qualities make him a great operations manager as well. Working together, we have become a wedding force to be reckoned with!
What differentiates you from other businesses in your field?
I think our very straight forward customer service style coupled with our popular all-inclusive event style really makes a strong presence in the wedding world. There are no assistants or automated answering services to get to the right person! If you call on a normal day, Chef Jon will pick up the phone and help a client on the first ring.
Why do you like working with weddings?
Who wouldn’t love this business? You get to plan one of he biggest days in someone’s life and make life long friends in the process. Even after so long, Jon and I still have an undeniable passion to make sure that every detail is covered so the happy couple can enjoy their day thoroughly.
What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a bride and how did you resolve it?
MOTHER NATURE!! We had a couple who had booked just their reception with us and their ceremony at a local outdoor location. On their big day, it didn’t just rain, it POURED!!! We set up a ceremony for them in our Adams Room, and it turned into the most memorable and happy experience. The bride still talks about it today.
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
Hire a planner. Remember, if you work with the Renaissance, a professional planner is already included. It really does make all the difference in the world!
What or who motivates you?
Our clients motivate us! The look on their faces when they walk into our ballroom for the first time motivates us! When we sit down for a food tasting on our balcony and we see them exchange that glance of “WOW,” that motivates us. Having a client call us after their big day and talk for an hour to exchange all the wonderful things they are taking away forever from their event is a GREAT feeling.
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
Sleep! But that is probably a common answer in this industry. Jon and I also like to work with our vendor friends in the wedding industry at the new Shoppes at The Renaissance, which is located right next door to the banquet facility. We have the honor of working with some of Richmond’s premier wedding vendors and it’s like no other experience out there.
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
Jon can rebuild a car engine!! It’s true!! And he used to own his own limo company on top of everything else.
I used to live on a farm! I grew up with the normal farm animals but also had a few pets that were not very normal. I had a skunk, a buffalo, two Llamas, zebras, a water buffalo, ostriches, emus, and so many more awesome animals. Kindergarten schools used to visit my family’s farm on field trips.
