Tell us a little about your company.
The Lighting & Sound Co. entered the wedding industry with a simple philosophy: everyone deserves a perfect event. We concluded that a perfect event consists of 3 major facets:
1. Quality. Our staff are thoroughly trained on production principles, hold industry certifications, and are educated on the important facets of a quality event. Each of our events is internally audited by our design team to ensure perfection. Equipment for your event will be installed in a safe manner, in accordance with industry standards and regulations, and will be placed neatly out of the way of your guests. We ensure that our teams have access to the best professional-grade equipment and methods available on the market by extensively testing new gear and sending our team to industry trade shows and seminars across the country. Everything, from the tools & equipment we use on site, to the trucks our techs arrive at your event in, is top-of-the-line.
2. Customer Care. We pride ourselves on our unrivaled customer service. Each and every client is important to us, so we won’t keep you waiting; along with offering extended office hours to help fit your schedule, we promise a prompt response to quote requests and maintain that throughout the event-planning process. We want to build relationships, so you will work with the same person from the moment you start your design process to the day of your wedding.
3. Affordability. We keep our prices affordable by reducing our overhead and unnecessary costs. The price you are quoted is the out-the-door price, with no extra below-the-line fees, additional service charges, or unreasonable add-ons.

How did you get started in this business?
I’ve worked in either theater or events industry since I was 12 years old. I fell in love with events in college while getting my degree in Lighting Design. By the time I was 19, I was the head lighting designer for Kings Dominion, where I worked seasonally while working for companies in the DMV. After over a decade in the industry working for companies that would field disappointing work, with low quality equipment, for outrageous prices, I teamed up with my brother, and a long-time coworker to form LSC. We were confident that between my history as a designer, and my brother’s experience as an already successful entrepreneur, we could make a positive impact on the industry. Our promise of “Event Perfection” immediately garnered us success, and we’ve been growing and expanding ever since.

What’s your favorite wedding story?
Impossible to say. So many of our couples have been just absolutely wonderful to work with, it just wouldn’t be fair to compare. The most recent one, however, happened last week at Independence Golf Club. We were doing a drape canopy in the pavilion affectionately referred to by the bride as “The Shed.” It was the most gorgeous day we’ve seen this year, we were all just happy to be outside to enjoy it. We had barely hung our first drape when the bride showed up, full of some of positive energy and praise. She thanked the entire crew, and was obviously very happy with the direction we were heading in. During a 6-hour drape hang, nothing could have raised our spirits more than her positive and kind words. Going home from setup with a happy bride is the best feeling in the world.

Why do you like working with weddings?
Every one is different, from the time of the quote request to the time we pack the truck after the event. We think Event Perfection is for everyone, and the more people we get to spread our message and brand to, the more we feel like we’re making a positive impact on people’s lives.

What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a bride and how did you resolve it?
We haven’t met a couple that we couldn’t create a perfect lighting design for, and our reviews reflect that. We think the success of each and every wedding we do is just as important to us as it is to our couples. Every wedding we design is meticulously planned and we’re very flexible; because of that it’s fairly easy to avoid difficult situations.

From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
Ask a lot of questions. Don’t accept anything less than the best. If a vendor takes a long time to get back to you, or is late to meetings, it probably reflects the way they’ll handle your wedding pretty well. Take recommendations but be cautious, just because a vendor or venue likes working with someone doesn’t mean you will.

How far in advance should couples book your services?
We prefer for couples to book us as early as possible, so we have plenty of time to make sure everything’s perfect. Our scope as a company has become fairly large though, we can handle quite a few events on the same day. We’ve never had to say “no” to a couple, and we don’t plan on it. Although I definitely wouldn’t recommend it, we have been booked as late as 2 days before a wedding though, it worked out just fine.

What inspires you the most / where do you find inspiration?
Elon Musk inspires us as business owners. He is truly making the world a better place, and we want to have the same impact on our little corner of the world. As a designer, I take a lot of inspiration from other professionals in the field, and I constantly expose myself to everything I can related to lighting.

What do you like to do when you are away from work?
Our crew is a family, and we spend a lot of time outside work together. When I’m not with my friends, I still enjoy working events and shows all over the country for friend’s and other companies, this helps me keep up to date on new technology, methods, and helps us build our network.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?
Not only do with love working with Richmond Weddings, we also love working for them. Along with having a booth at RW’s show twice a year, we also provide lighting for their Fashion Show, where we get to work with all kinds of other fantastic Richmond Weddings Vendors.
