Vendor Spotlight: Mike Dodson with Music Makes You Happy Entertainment
We’re introducing you to Mike with Music Makes You Happy Entertainment. Thanks for the interview Mike! It was fun hearing your story!
Tell us a little about the company.
Music Makes You Happy Entertainment is a full time, full service entertainment company specializing in weddings, corporate functions and other fun events. We are truly a one stop shop for all your entertainment needs. DJ’s, emcees, lighting, photo booths, and event management, we can help with it all! We serve all of the Richmond Metro area and beyond and would love to help with your next event.
How did you get started in this business?
Chris Rice (the owner) and I went to school together (Shout out to CNU!). Both he and I were part of a sketch comedy group called, CNU ToNight! Lots of our sketches were centered around music, current events, and college life. Chris started DJ’ing events on campus and I was known for creating custom mixed tapes and blasting music at obscene levels out of my dorm room. Years later, Chris took his hobby to the next level and founded MMYH in 2011. Since day one, this has been his full time job, his career and his passion, second only to his family. I joined a few years later and haven’t looked back. I absolutely love DJ’ing and spending time sharpening my skills. Whether the event is large or small, creating an environment where EVERYONE is having a great time is what it’s all about!
What’s your favorite wedding story?
I had the pleasure of DJ’ing a wedding for an awesome couple earlier this year. We were getting close to the end of the event so I announced the last song of the night. Everyone was having so much fun that they offered to take a collection to get me to keep the party going into the night. The owner of the venue wasn’t too pleased as she was eager to wrap things up. I politely declined the generous offer from the crowd and proceeded with the grand finale. Everyone circled the bride & groom and sang along to the grand finale song. Afterwards, everyone couldn’t stop talking about how much fun they had, and how family members who hadn’t danced in years were on the dance floor having a blast! What a great night!
Why do you like working with weddings?
There are so many details that couples are concerned with regarding wedding planning. We spend a lot of time working alongside them to ensure that everything is to their specifications. The couple can lean on our expertise and insight to help them craft the most memorable occasion ever. The music lays the foundation for that. Also, we love to have fun and we love when people have fun with us!
What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a couple and how did you resolve it?
We had a couple with a pretty extensive Do-Not-Play list, so we had to be creative with the open dancing portion of the event. We are always engaging and welcome song requests from wedding guests. However, most of the requests were for songs on the Do-Not-Play list. The couple were very adamant about the music they did not want to hear, so we were able to honor their request and use our music knowledge to keep the dance floor jumping. In the end, a great time was had by all!
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
Take your time and enjoy the process! Wedding planning can be really stressful. Communicate and make decisions together as a couple.
How far in advance should couples book your services?
We are already booking events for late 2018! It’s a good rule of thumb to book your vendors at least 12 months in advance.
What inspires you the most / where do you find inspiration?
I love music of all genres and I get inspiration from other DJ’s. There is nothing like hearing a well done hip hop/country mashup!
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
When I’m not DJ’ing or collecting music, I’m a family guy. My family is my everything. I’m a pretty blessed guy!
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I have a very unique middle name. Contact me for more info. LOL!
